Summer Reading Program

Freshman Honors English

Great Expectations, Charles Dickens
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

Requirements:

1. Read the 2 novels listed above and write one essay. This essay must be at least one page in length; double-spaced, 10 or 12 point font with your name in the upper right hand corner. Choose from the following options:

Option One: Great Expectations: The character of Magwitch is important to the plot development of the novel. Magwitch's one overriding goal was to work hard so that Pip might benefit and achieve happiness and success in life. Ultimately, do you think Pip was helped or hurt by his "great expectations"? Use details from the novel to back up your opinion.

Option Two: To Kill a Mockingbird: In what ways would the childhood experiences recounted in the story help Jean Louise (Scout) grow into a compassionate, less prejudiced adult? Use three to five specific examples and quotations from the text to support your opinion.

2. Be prepared to hand in your essay on Orientation night. If you are unable to come to school at that time, please bring or mail your essay earlier to Marilyn St. Pierre (address can be found in the school handbook)

3. Be prepared for an objective test on the two novels the first week of school.

Have a great summer vacation, and I look forward to seeing you in the new school year.
