Civics (ELP)
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Full Year
Prerequisite: None
This course focuses on the development of economics and political knowledge and skills needed by all students for becoming responsible citizens in an interdependent world. Major emphasis will be placed on the exploration of the foundations and structures of government, the political processes, citizenship, and law education. Economic topics for study may include basic economic concepts, economic institutions, and reasoned approaches for analyzing and evaluating economic problems, actions, and policies. Political, governmental, and legal topics include basic concepts, institutions, and processes, political socialization and political behavior, decision makers and their roles, and the analysis and evaluation of political problems and policies.

Honors Civics (ELP)
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, Full Year
Prerequisite: A grade of A or B in previous course

World History

Prerequisite: Civics
This course will cover the period from early civilization to the present. Topics to be explored include: the development of modern civilizations and cultures, the role of Western civilization and its relationship to non-Western civilizations, major political, economic, social, cultural, and religious changes as they affect the world, and the role of geography in the history of the world. Students are expected to discuss cooperation and conflict, revolution and reaction, chance, diversity and uniformity, regionalism and internationalism, innovation, cultural diffusion, movement, and the relation of environment to each time period discussed. The use of charts and diagrams will be incorporated as a means to enhance critical thinking skills.

Honors World History
Grade 10, 11, 12, Full Year
Prerequisite: A grade of A or B in Civics

A.P. U.S. History

The AP program in U.S. History is designed to provide students with the analytic skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in US history. The program prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon them equivalent to those made by full-year introductory college courses. Students should learn to assess historical materials – their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability, and their importance – and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. An AP US History course should thus develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay format. Extensive reading and summer work required. This course is not available as an independent study course.

A.P. World History
Grade 11, 12 Full Year
Prerequisite: A grade of A or B in previous course
The purpose of the AP World History course is to develop greater understanding of the evolution of global processes and contacts, in interaction with different types of human societies. This understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills. The course highlights the nature of changes in international frameworks and their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies. The course emphasizes relevant factual knowledge deployed in conjunction with leading interpretive issues and types of historical evidence. The course builds on an understanding of cultural, institutional, and technological precedents that, along with geography, set the human stage. Periodization, explicitly discussed, forms an organizing principle for dealing with change and continuity throughout the course. Specific themes provide further organization to the course, along with the consistent attention to contacts among societies that form the core of world history as a field of study. Extensive reading and summer work required. This course is not available as an independent study course.

A.P. European History
