Christian Ethics I
Grade 9, One semester
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to discuss various ethical issues that students may encounter and to encourage them to make decisions based on God’s Word, the Bible. Weekly memory work and Christian videos, books, and magazines area used as supplementary materials. Topics include drugs, abortion, cloning, suicide, death and dying, cheating, sex, being responsible, relating to others and making wise choices.

Ordinary People – Extraordinary Faith
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to explore biblical and contemporary people that God has used to achieve His will and purpose. And realize He can use each of us if we are willing. The Bible is the primary text. The Purpose Driven Life and other Christian books and videos are used, including: “Stress Management,” “Prescription for Poor Decision Making,” and “Dying High: Teens in the ER” to help teens realize the importance of “Walking the walk, not just talking the talk.”

The Gospels
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: None

This course will explore the life and times of Jesus through the Gospels of the New Testament. Students will be introduced to the unique portrait of Jesus and to the particular message that each Gospel writer intended for their respective audience. Methods of critical interpretation will be utilized to illuminate each Gospel’s major themes while attention will be given to how early Christian writings were composed, used, preserved, and collected.

Acts and Paul’s Letters

Prerequisite: The Gospels

This course will evaluate the beginning of the church. Students will continue learning about the twelve apostles and their lives after Christ’s resurrection.

Old Testament (Sampson Community College)
Grade 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: For minimum standards,
students must satisfy requirements for Dual Enrollment courses
This course is a survey of the literature of the Hebrews with readings from the law, prophets, and other writings. Emphasis is placed on the use of literary, historical, archeological, and cultural analysis. Upon completion, students should be able to use the tools of critical analysis to read and understand Old Testament literature.
This course is designed to trace the lineage of Christ from the book of Genesis to the birth of King David. Endeavoring to show the importance of God’s plans in the Old Testaments as a preparation for the New Testament.

For minimum standards, students must satisfy requirements for Dual Enrollment courses
This course is a survey of literature of first-century Christianity with readings from the gospels, Acts, and the Pauline and pastoral letters. Topics include the literary structure, audience, and religious perspective of the writings, as well as the historical and cultural content of the early Christian community. Upon completion, students should be able to use the tools of critical analysis to read and understand New Testament literature.

World Religions (Sampson Community College)
Grade 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite:
For minimum standards, students must satisfy requirements for Dual Enrollment courses
This course introduces the world’s major religious traditions. Topics include Primal religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Upon completion, students should be able to identify the origins, history, beliefs, and practices of the religions studied.

Philosophical Issues (Sampson Community College)
Grade 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite:
For minimum standards, students must satisfy requirements for Dual Enrollment courses
This course introduces fundamental issues in philosophy considering the views of classical and contemporary philosophers. Emphasis is placed on knowledge and belief, appearance, and reality, determinism and free will, faith and reason, and justice and inequality. Upon completion, students should be able to identify, analyze, and critique the philosophical components of an issue.

Religion in America (Sampson Community College)
Grade 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite:
For minimum standards, students must satisfy requirements for Dual Enrollment courses
This course is an examination of religious beliefs and practice in the United States. Emphasis is placed on mainstream religious traditions and non-traditional religious movements from the Colonial period to the present. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize and appreciate the diversity of religious traditions in America.
