For all high school graduates:
1. A high school diploma or its equivalent
2. Four English courses, emphasizing grammar, composition, and literature.
3. Four mathematics courses, three of which include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and a higher level math course requiring Algebra II as a prerequisite.
4. Three science courses including at least one unit in a life or biological science, at least one unit in a physical science, and at least one laboratory science.
5. Two social studies courses including US history.
In addition, it is highly recommended that prospective students:
1. Complete at least two courses in one foreign language, and
2. Take one of those foreign languages, as well as one mathematics course in the twelfth grade.
Competitive schools, such as UNC Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, and Duke, expect applicants to exceed minimum course requirements. Most competitive candidates take exceptionally tough academic programs – often the most difficult course of study available in their schools. The rigor of a student’s courses, including courses taken during the senior year, weighs heavily in the evaluation procedures of competitive colleges and universities.
