Latin I

Prerequisite: Pass English II with an A or B or Teacher approval
The study of Roman and Greek civilization, Latin vocabulary, Latin grammar, and oral translation. Latin is extremely grammar based and moves at a quick pace as students prepare for the National Latin Exam administered in March.

The continued study of Roman civilization, Latin vocabulary, Latin grammar, and oral translation. Students move at a quick pace as they prepare for the National Latin Exam administered in March.

Spanish I
Grade 10, 11, 12, Full Year
Prerequisite: None (Teacher approval for those electing to take Spanish I in 10th grade)
An introductory course in Spanish, focusing on understanding and speaking the language, acquiring a good vocabulary base and beginning basic present tense and preterite conjugations of verbs. Culture of Spanish speaking countries is infused into the curriculum. (Taking Spanish I in the 10 th grade would imply that the student’s intention is to complete Spanish I, II, and III OR Spanish I and II and then Latin I. A foreign language should be on the student’s schedule in the 12th grade.)

Spanish II
Grade 11, 12, Full Year
Prerequisite: Spanish I
A continuation of Spanish I with an increased vocabulary base. Verb tenses learned include the present, present progressive, imperfect progressive, present perfect, conditional, future, preterite, imperfect and subjunctive. Class also includes reading (in English) the literary works of contemporary Hispanic authors.

Spanish III
Grade 12 Full Year
Prerequisite: Pass Spanish II with a grade of B or better and teacher approval
A continuation of Spanish II with a focus on understanding and using the language. Subjunctive tense is stressed and explored. Literature written by Hispanic authors is read - in Spanish.
