Computer Applications
Grade 9, 10, 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: 7th and 8th grade computer classes

Students use text and technology to learn computer concepts and the application of Office 2003. After many “hands-on” exercises and demonstrations, students gain confidence in their abilities to use PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and the Internet. They will also complete a capstone assignment that includes all of the Office 2003 applications.

Accounting
Grade 10, 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: None

Accounting is designed to promote student interest and involvement in the business world. The thrust of the course is learning the rules and procedures of accounting for profit motivated businesses. Learning the “how” and “why” of accounting will not only enable the student to keep accurate records, but will also give knowledge to make wise business decisions.

Consumer Business
Grade 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: None

This class is designed to prepare students for the real world. It is not only important to have book knowledge, they need practical knowledge about how the real world operates. Budgeting, mortgages, and insurance are just a few of the topics discussed in this course.

Web Design
Grade 10, 11, 12, One semester
Prerequisite: Computer Applications

The goal of Web Design is to further the student’s interest and education in computer technology by learning the essentials of creating Web pages. They will learn how to insert and format different types of text, images, hyperlinks, tables, and different media formats. The life cycle of a web site will also be implemented: planning, developing, and maintaining. Dreamweaver © software will be used for this Macromedia class. Students will also learn basic html.

Journalism/Public Relations
Grade 10, 11, 12, Full Year
Prerequisite: Teacher approval

The Journalism class is responsible for designing, writing, editing, and distributing the “Green & Gold” and the “Crusader Corner.” Articles may also be sent to local newspapers. In addition to creating articles, taking pictures, and designing layouts, students will learn to set goals and meet deadlines. Students will also be responsible for morning devotion information.

Desktop Publishing (Yearbook)
Grade 10, 11, 12 Fall semester OR Full Year
Prerequisite: Teacher approval
This course is an intensive publishing course using InDesign CS. It incorporates the creative and business sides of publishing. Students are required to sell ads, design layouts, write copy, and publish the “Shield’s Image,” the HCA yearbook.
