Course Title: English 111- Dual Enrollment

Description :

 

This course is the required first course in a series of two designed to develop the ability to produce clear expository prose. Emphasis is placed on the writing process including audience analysis, topic selection, thesis support and development, editing, and revision. Upon completion, students should be able to produce unified, coherent, well-developed essays using standard written English. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in English composition.

 

 

Textbook: The Prose Reader, 8 th Edition, by Flachmann, Published by Prentice

Hall.*

at the SCC bookstore within one week of the first class.

Sticky notes – 3x3 size or 1x1

Pocket folder for home/school use

Loose-leaf paper

3-ring binder or other separate spiral notebook or section of binder

for notes/ journals (subject to collection)

Access to Internet and Microsoft Office

Memory stick highly recommended

Tissues for classroom use appreciated J

 

Major Course Objectives:

- To develop and demonstrate an understanding of basic grammar and punctuation; diction; the mechanics of writing; and various types of sentences, paragraphs, and longer compositions.

 

 

 

Attendance:

 

Classes will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, except when otherwise announced due scheduling conflicts between HCA and SCC. Tuesdays and Fridays will be study halls.

 

All students are expected to attend every scheduled class. Attendance is computed beginning with the first scheduled class meeting. If an emergency prevents a student from attending class, the student should notify his/her instructor as soon as possible.

 

In the event that a student does not attend at least 85 percent if all scheduled contact hours, the instructor may drop the student. If there are extenuating circumstances, the instructor has the authority to make an exception to the attendance policy.

 

Students are expected to report to class on time. Specific guidelines regarding attendance and tardiness are included in the attendance policy.

 

SECHS and concurrently/dual-enrolled students are expected to attend their college classes whether or not the public schools are in session. All absences in college classes are covered in SCC’s Attendance Policy.

 

 

Grading and Evaluation:

 

The final grade will be determined in accordance with the following scale:

90-100=A Grammar Tests 20%

80-89 =B Compositions 60%

70-79 =C Reading Quizzes 10%

60-69 =D Final Exam 10%

0-59 = F TOTAL 100%

 

 

Timeline:

 

There are 16 general areas of focus that may be addressed both independently and concurrently. For example, the description essay may be studied for punctuation and agreement, and on another occasion the role of sentence fragments and structure in description may be considered. Independent lessons on each of the grammar issues will be frequent. The general sequence will follow the essay types listed in steps 8-16 and parallel the textbook.
