
Sixth Grade Social Studies Syllabus

Description of course:
The social studies program for the sixth grade focuses on the study of our world, its geography and history, focusing primarily on ancient civilizations, ancient Europe, as well as western and eastern Europe. Some of the countries of South America, Africa, and Asia will be studied briefly. Studying the history and geography of so much of the world is not an easy task for these young learners, They have not quite grasped the concept of time and space. Understanding geography and culture can make this task easier. We will be studying the geographical features of an area and the culture of the people who live there. Language Arts skills are reinforced throughout the course of this program.

Materials:
Notes, study sheets, and informational sheets will be kept in 3-ring binder. Colored pencils, hi-liter, pencil and paper always available

* acquire information from a variety of sources
* use information for problem solving, decision making, and planning
* use the five themes of geography to analyze geographical concepts
* examine the relationship between economic activity and the quality of life
* assess the influence and contributions of cultural groups
* interpret information from maps, globes, and charts
* compare data of different countries
* identify significant patterns in movement of goods and ideas
* to recognize the influence of the past
* make a connection to the past to the present
* to understand the concept of interrelationships

Major assessment:
Evaluation methods include quizzes, tests, observation ofclass participation, cooperative group work, projects, reports, and homework ( which most often will be essay responses to study questions)
* all homework is averaged and equals one major test grade
* all projects equal one major test grade. ( Projects must fit criteria established)
* all quizzes averaged and have the weight of 2 major test grade
Enrichment Activities:
* field trips
* designing a vacation brochure
* writing a script for selected Wm. Shakespeare’s work
* completing a collage
* creating a catalogue for residents of the Middle Ages
* internet research
* current events folder
* research on famous historical figure
* biography on King Tut
