Course Description: The sixth grade math curriculum will combine the objectives in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the Harrells Christian Academy Curriculum Guide. Students will use manipulatives, pictures, number lines, and symbols in a variety of contexts. Students extend their understanding of place value to decimals. Numerical comparisons are expressed as ratios and rates and solved as ratio, proportion, and percent. Geometry includes formulas for perimeter, area, volume, and circumference. Students study congruence, similarity, symmetries, transformation, integers, and the coordinate plane. Students investigate increasingly complex problem solving, graphs, histograms, patterns, charts, tables, patterns and the relationship between variables.
Textbook: Mathematics-Course I by Prentice Hall, 2004.
Required Materials: textbook, notebook, paper, pencils, compass, protractor, ruler, graph paper, colored pencils, scissors, and glue
Grading Procedures: Daily grades will be taken from homework assignments and classroom assignments. The average of daily grades will count the equivalent to one chapter test grade at the end of each six weeks grading period.
Test Grades: Chapter tests will carry twice the weight of quizzes.
Extra Credit: Opportunities to receive bonus points are offered twice per six weeks with a maximum of five points each. These opportunities may include class demonstrations and research.
Classroom Management: Students are expected to enter the classroom quickly and sit in their assigned seats. They are required to place their homework on top of their desks promptly. The teacher quickly checks to see if homework has been completed. Students who have incomplete work will be given two warnings with notes to their parents in the students SAB before Friday school is assigned. The teacher explains any misunderstandings concerning homework before the next lesson begins.
Classroom Expectations: Students are expected to complete/attempt all assigned homework, listen and pay attention to the teacher, follow directions participate in class and ask questions. Students are expected to read independently for understanding and prepare themselves for tests and quizzes. Students are encouraged to seek extra help from the teacher during activity period.
Classroom Conduct: Students who disrupt the classroom learning process will be reprimanded in the following manner:
-
Verbal warning from the teacher
-
Note or phone call to parent
-
Parent notification with Friday School
-
Referral to headmaster
Major Course Concepts/Skills: The learner will demonstrate an understanding of:
Goal 1: Compute with rational numbers
Goal 2: Select and use appropriate tools to measure two-and three- dimensional figures
Goal 3: Understand and use properties and relationships of geometric figures in the coordinate plane.
Goal 4: Understand and determine probabilities
Goal 5: Demonstrate an understanding of simple algebraic expressions
