8 th Grade Computer Applications
Course
Description: Computer class for the eighth grade is a twelve week course designed to further expose students to a range of functions and techniques in order to be more efficient on the computer. The students will be introduced to many new terms and will complete many “hands-on” applications in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and desktop publishing. They will better understand the role of computers and computer ethics in the home, the school, and the world of business.

Objectives: To better understand how to use the following:

Copyright Laws – site sources of copyrighted materials

Desktop publishing skills – create and edit publications, create flyers; create a newsletter using a template

Technology dependent occupations

Databases – use, create, edit, search, and sort strategies; create reports
-
Ethical issues – security, privacy, passwords, and personal information; phishing; and biometrics
-
Multimedia presentations – Internet research; create, publish & present slideshow
-
Spreadsheets – create and edit criteria for charts, tables and graphs; formulas and functions; formatting values, text and columns
-
Telecommunications – conduct online research; evaluate information; validity and appropriateness; content and usefulness

Word processing skills – editing basics; formats involving characters, paragraphs and documents; use templates and placeholder text, full-block style letters
Most of the documents we create will be based on North Carolina facts and figures. The students will research the information on the Internet.
Improve Keyboarding skills:
Every night (Monday – Thursday) the student will be required to keyboard for at least 15 minutes and bring in their keyboarding work each day. It is very important that the students practice keyboarding correctly –

Feet positioned for balance.

Center body the “h” key with elbows at sides.

Sit up straight.
-
Curve fingers over the home keys.

Keep wrists off the keyboard.
-
Keep eyes on printed copy.
-
Key by touch.
-
Key with a smooth rhythm.
Materials: One inch notebook ,Pencil
Grading: Class work, Homework, Notebook 40%
Test & Projects 60%
Policies: Follow all school rules in the handbook including the computer use contract.
Students will not play games, open emails, etc. in the computer lab.
Misconduct will be handles per the handbook on pages 101-102.
Make sure you put your name on all your work before you print it.
If you miss class, you are responsible for finding out what you missed and making it up as soon as possible.
If you miss a test, you must come to me and discuss when to make it up. (If you
knew about the test and have all the material for the test, I expect you to take the test on the day you return to school.)
Expectations: Be respectful.
Do your best.
Bring your folder and pencil to class every day.
Look on the board and begin the assignment.
Use the restroom and get water between classes.
Behavior that prevents you or others from learning will not be tolerated.
