Middle School Dress and Appearance Code

As a college preparatory school, Harrells Christian Academy strives to encourage a “dress for success” appearance. Dress for school should always be tasteful, clean, neat, and unexaggerated. Extremes in hair length or hair styles are prohibited. If a student’s appearance is deemed inappropriate by any faculty, the student will be sent to the appropriate school head (Upper, Middle, or Lower School Head) or the Headmaster who will decide on a case by case basis what action to take. The Upper, Middle, or Lower School Head will be the ultimate judge as to whether dress meets HCA expectations. Unless notified, students going on field trips will follow the “dress code.”

The following are HCA’s dress expectations…

Clothing with messages or an illustration that are lewd, indecent, vulgar or that advertises any product, service, or bar establishments are not permitted.

Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be of sufficient length – the length guideline – top of knee or below.

Boys’ shirttails shall be worn IN.

The following situations will not be acceptable:

Sagging or shabby/torn trousers or shorts.

Athletic-type shorts, cutoffs, or swim suit clothing

Exposed or revealing undergarments.

See-through clothing.

Clothing that exposes cleavage.

Clothing must cover midriff at all positions.

Halter tops, low-cut tank tops, tops with spaghetti straps, strapless, (no off-the-shoulder tops) and /or backless tops and dresses are not permitted. No midriff shirts or skirts that reveal undergarments. No revealing undergarments during PE classes or HCA athletic practices.

Hats, caps, bandannas, sunglasses, tattoos, -- not permitted on students during the school instructional hours – only appropriate for field day and certain special athletic activities.

Facial hair or long sideburns are not acceptable. All students should keep their hair neat and clean. Boy’s hair should be ear length or above and tastefully groomed. Boys must be clean shaven and may not have beards or mustaches. If after one week the student has not complied with an appropriate haircut, the student will not be admitted to school until compliance.

Pony tails and earrings for boys are unacceptable.

Visible body piercing and jewelry is not acceptable – exception is that girls may wear earrings.

Dress for school trips and athletic competition will be determined by the trip sponsor or team coach – in addition to adhering to the HCA Dress Code.

DRESS CODE violations will result in a phone call to parents for appropriate clothing and/or the school will provide coverage.
