Lower School Spanish
The Spanish resource classes will provide students with an introduction to the Spanish language. Speaking, singing, hearing, and understanding the Spanish language are emphasized. Reading and writing and grammar are not covered at this level, though some of the basic pronunciation rules are covered. The classes are one semester in length and meet once per week for thirty minutes.
Kindergarten
Students will be familiar with and able to speak Spanish vocabulary dealing with the following topics. Students will be able to ask and answer questions, sing songs, and plays games related to the following:
- Animals
- Greetings
- Numbers 1 – 20
- Colors
- Classroom vocabulary
- Classroom commands
- Foods
- Weather
- Courtesy
- Descriptive adjectives
- Body parts
First Grade
Students will be familiar with and able to speak all of the Spanish vocabulary from Kindergarten, as well as the following topics:
- Days of the week
- Months of the year
- Immediate family members
- Infinitive form of various action verbs
- Helping verbs to use with infinitives in sentences
- Simple verbs (I am; You are) to use with adjectives
- Popular sports
- Additional animals
- Weather
- Additional body parts
- Counting by tens
- Additional helping verbs to use with infinitives
- Additional sports
- Extended family members
- Additional animals
- Alphabet
- Simple sentences with “I have” and “You have”
- Counting to 100 by ones
Third grade
Students will be familiar with and able to speak all of the Spanish vocabulary from Kindergarten, first and second grades, as well as the following topics:
- Additional animals
- Additional sports
- Clothes
- Directions (prepositions of location)
- Rooms of the house
Fourth grade
Students will be familiar with and able to speak all of the Spanish vocabulary from Kindergarten, first, second, and third grades, as well as the following topics:
- Additional foods
- Additional clothes
- Time (hours only)
- Adjectives of description
- Verb “ser” (to be) used with adjectives of description
- Age
Fifth grade
Students will be familiar with and able to speak all of the Spanish vocabulary from Kindergarten, first, second, third, and fourth grades, as well as the following topics:
- Time (hours and minutes)
- Using “¿Dónde está?” (“Where is it?” with prepositions of location)
- Verb “ser” (to be) used with adjectives of description
- Age
